Open Source MS-Project Killer? Projity OpenProj 1.0
More than one person has moaned aloud at the thought of having to review — or worse yet, update — a Microsoft Project file. Sure, there are online and downloadable Project file viewers, and plenty of competitors in the project management application space. But most of them cost money, have limited features or are otherwise wonky in some way.
Until now. Welcome Projity’s OpenProj 1.0, a full-featured cross-platform open source project management application that reads/writes MS-Project .mpp, Project 2003 .XML and Projity’s own .pod files. This is no trial version or crippleware, it’s the real thing, and it comes in Linux, Unix, Mac (PPC/X86) and, yes, Windows versions. As others point out, this could be a welcome addition to the OpenOffice suite of enterprise open source productivity applications.
I have just started tinkering with OpenProj — the 1.0 version launched recently — and so far, I’m impressed. According to the OpenProj site, so are the top guns at places like Sourceforge, Ubuntu, Mandriva, Sabayon Linux and Novell.
Right now it’s an EOS Directory candidate, but we’re looking to rate it and add it to the directory. If you’ve got comments about OpenProj, add them below. I’ll keep checking to see if SteveB from Redmond posts a thumbs-down comment. Then we’ll know for sure it’s the real thing!

I have used OpenProj since they released it and cannot say enough positives!!!!! It is not just that it is free, it opened every one of my Microsoft Project files with no problems and I started working immediately. We have some Linux machines and it works equally well on those and I assume on the Mac’s as well. I use OpenProj on WIndows and once again it is great. We have no need for additional Microsoft Project licenses and in fact have migrated all our licenses away and are using OpenProj exclusively. More people need to know about this !!!!

Used OpenProj for about six months now and I haven’t found anything worthy of note that it can’t do in comparison with MS Project. The interface has improved markedly as well from the earlier beta releases, only been using v1.0 for a few days but early signs are very good.

Not being pointy haired, I normally do not need to view MS Project files. But recently when I had to, OpenProj came to my rescue. It is a nice app. I wish I could select and export one column in plain text. (Selected the column, but “Copy” copies only the first cell. I had to save as MS Project 2003 XML and write a small XSLT script to extract the column I wanted).
By the way while downloading that from sourceforge.net, I realized that it had a piece of Javascript connecting the browser to data.coremetrics.com and sending some data to it. Isn’t this the tracking server ? Wonder why sourceforge.net has anything to do with such a thing….
I would suggest OpenProj’s sponsors to set up their own download site instead of sourceforge.net.
